Feeling’s Cafe & Piano Bar

Feeling’s Cafe

Candlelit garden and overall mood momentarily overrides butter…..

“Feelings Cafe is set on a quiet corner just behind the French Quarter. If you do not have a reservation, the owners may ask you to bide your time in the charming Patio Bar, once the slave quarters of the D’Aunoy plantation.

Separated from the courtyard by a row of French doors, the Piano Bar is the main attraction for many of our visitors. The restaurant’s cozy bar fills the first floor of the slave quarters, and the piano player takes requests and plays romantic songs that make you feel like singing along. At other times, a superb collection of recorded music whispers in the background”—-Feelings Café www.feelingscafe.com

Eggs-cost-us a HO’ lot of money

The Columns

Ho’ should have been wrapped like the butter.`

Wrapped butter, average cornbread prefix :cup of gumbo, salad, eggs, sausage, spicy chedder cheese grits, peach cobbler. $33 shitty eggs.

“Southern Brunch” on Father’s Day…what were we thinking?

We forgot to go back and reference our friend’s NOLA recommendations. She said have a cocktail and watch the streetcar on St. Charles Ave. go up and down. Appreciate historic and beautiful sights but she didn’t say eat there!

In case you were wondering about the HO’ her side note is as stated: where they filmed Pretty Baby (Louis Malle’s movie featuring the underaged Brooke Shields as a ‘ho)

***Must say—Great Porch and beautiful interior!

Don’t watch the streetcar too long….jump on it. Drops you by the Casino— watch your pockets.

Boudin Balls on the Bywater

Elizabeth’s Restaurant

Oh my gosh…………..Fried Boudin Balls with mustard sauce!

Did I say oh my gosh…give me a moment.

Ok, alright…no dieting here. We tried it all.

Seafood Stuffed Mirliton

Old Fashion Callas

Red Neck Eggs: Fried green tomatoes with poached eggs and Hollandaise. Served with grits or hash browns.

Said Famous Bloody Mary but could pass!

*********************************************

Hip wait staff. Inquired about local art scene and if in walking distance. Waiter said, “Where are you from?” “NYC,” said Bubba. Boog said, “What if I am from Oklahoma?” Waiter said, ” Best take a cab!” We walked.

** please note though we walked it is inexpensive and advisable to take a cab.

Pig out at COUCHON

COUCHON

Creamy butter served up in a monkey dish.

www.cochonrestaruant.com

Small Plates–Wood-Fired Oyster Roast is a must and the Jalapeno Spoonbread with Stewed Okra and Blackeyed Peas, a side of fresh Lima Beans and Chard made Boog feel right at home.

Boucherie–Next up, was the Spicy Grilled Pork Ribs with Watermelon Pickle which was a bit too tough for our taste…we like our ribs to fall right off of the bone.

Entree–Oven-Roasted Gulf Fish “Fisherman’s Style”–Red Snap Snap Snapper!

Overall, small plates is the way to go– our favorite just like at Momofuko. Creative and innovative you just can’t go wrong.

Sidenote: While waiting for our taxi back to the Quarter, the staff winding up for the evening gave directions to the best “local” New Orleans breakfast–Elizabeth’s Restaurant on the Bywater.

Ck out the NYTimes article….it’s a Momofuku on the Mississippi.

New York Times
Coast to Coast Restaurants that Count
Published: March 12, 2008
By Frank Bruni

Frank Bruni dined at 15 significant restaurants that opened in 2006 or 2007, and ranked his top 10.

“…New York is absurdly blessed, but of course the city doesn’t have it all. It doesn’t have anything exactly like Cochon, in New Orleans, which liberates Cajun cooking from its deep-fried clichés. With its stylishly casual vibe, fatty abandon, worship of pork (cochon is French for pig) and fervent devotees, it’s a Momofuku on the Mississippi.

…Just about any food lover who has spent any time in New Orleans over the last two years has been to this irresistible restaurant, and has responded with the kind of swoon typically reserved for the front rows at an Obama rally… This restaurant is about heartfelt feasting…”

Cafe du Monde:Sweet Treat no need to explain…

Cafe au Lait and sugar-piled fried doughnuts

Cafe du Monde

Bubba ain’t complaining.

Coop’s first stop an exception to the rule

Wrapped whip butter yet damn good Cajun grub.

COOP’S PLACE

A dive bar, both Boog and I loved and would frequent again on any trip to New Orleans.

Be sure to try the Sausage and Rabbit Jambalaya, mustard based Killer Slaw made from scratch, Red Beans with Rice and Sausage, Blackened Redfish with a cup of cream mustard sauce (you might need to request) and Cajun Fried Chicken.

Open noon and long into the evening for cheap eats and drinks $32 bucks.

Don’t be fooled, Coop’s is the real deal…outdoor kitchen and smoker

and even an out house in the back…Half jokin’ about the out house

(no poops in Coops says Bubba).

Recomendations before we land in the Big Easy…

Boog’s friend from NYU cleverly and kindly recommended these stops from her home town…New Orleans.

EATS
-Coop’s place - casual, dive-bar atmosphere, but damned good. Menu suggestions:
gumbo and rabbit & sausage jambalaya with an Abita Restoration ale. In French
Quarter
.
http://www.coopsplace.net/

-Cafe du Monde - cafe au lait and sugar-piled fried doughnuts. You just gotta. French
Quarter
http://www.cafedumonde.com/
Cochon
http://www.cochonrestaurant.com/

DRINKS
Columns Hotel - where they filmed Pretty Baby (Louis Malle’s movie featuring
the underaged Brooke Shields as a ‘ho) and, more importantly, where I stayed
after we got married! Great porch for watching the streetcar on St. Charles ave
Uptown.
http://www.thecolumns.com/

Feelings Cafe - it’s a restaurant and the food is pretty good, but the bar is awesome.
it’s in an interior courtyard in what used to be a plantation house in the Marigny/Bywater
section of NOLA. Also, the peanut butter pie is amazing for dessert.
http://www.feelingscafe.com/

RBar - oh, how many sweet hours of my life did I waste here? There’s a surprisingly
nice inn upstairs, but the downstairs bar is the spot for not-quite-divey but casual
drinks.
http://royalstreetinn.com/

ACTIVITIES

-Sit a while on the benches along the Mighty Mississip, behind Cafe du Monde; stroll
through Jackson Square across the street and the rest of the quarter.
-Take a streetcar ride along St Charles and look at all the garden district houses.
-If it can happen safely, survey the flood damage in the lower 9th ward. Apparently,
the musician’s village is a thing to see.
MISC
-Make sure to always check hours of restaurants. They still sometimes close ridiculously
early, like 8 or 9 in some instances.
-Gambit is the local Village Voice-ish listings paper. Offbeat is good for music
listings.
-Be safe! No walking about late at night alone. A good cab company to call
is United. http://www.unitedcabs.com/

The Butter Theory

The Butter Theory (TBT) is a based on the belief that tasty butter equals first-rate eats.

—A blog about eating and drinking, edited and published by Bubba and Boog.

The Butter Theory blog documents our collection of dinning experiences in which we attempt to please the palette, discover new digs and always delight in the occasional exception to the theory. From dives to four stars, our palettes lead us through Manhattan, the boroughs and beyond.

****Hint from Bubba and Boog:

Don’t get Whipped at first sight, first bite tread easy when the following applies!
